Leadership is crucial to guiding a group towards shared objectives and fostering organizational unity. It involves effectively utilizing resources and leveraging inspirational skills to motivate and influence others. In the early childhood setting, the presence or absence of specific leadership theories or behaviors can significantly impact the success and growth of individuals.

One leadership theory that I find personally compelling is the participative theory. Encouraging leadership in the early education profession is vital for ensuring that young children receive the best possible education and care. Participative leaders involve workers in decision-making, motivating them to contribute ideas and solve problems collectively. An example of the participative theory in action is during professional learning communities (PLCs) in an early childhood setting. Teachers and the principal and assistant principal come together to discuss lesson plans, differentiation strategies, and challenges faced. By integrating expertise and perspectives, they collaboratively construct lessons that provide a holistic educational experience for young children.

Another leadership theory that I find intriguing is transformational leadership. Effective leaders ensure the completion of present tasks, empower employees and guide the organization towards future success. Transformational leaders act as role models in education, fostering imagination, revolution, and community. They create an environment that allows teachers and students to excel, cultivating a culture of continuous improvement and preparing students for future leadership roles. An example of transformational leadership in an early childhood setting is during Parents, Teachers, and Associations (PTA) meetings. The leaders encourage active involvement, collaboration, and open communication, creating a solid partnership between parents and educators.

Applying these leadership theories and behaviors contributes to an individual’s ability to become and remain an effective leader. Participative leadership encourages collaboration and empowers individuals, leading to better decision-making and problem-solving. This fosters a sense of ownership and commitment among team members. On the other hand, transformational leadership inspires and motivates others, nurturing a culture of growth and excellence. It promotes innovation, creativity, and continuous learning.

In conclusion, leadership theories and behaviors play a crucial role in the early childhood setting. Participative leadership encourages collaboration and empowers individuals, while transformational leadership inspires and motivates others. By integrating these theories and behaviors, educational leaders can create an environment that promotes collaboration, creativity, and student achievement. Research in educational leadership has highlighted the relevance of different theories and styles to effective management. A review of leadership theories, principles, and styles shows significant implications for educational management (Amanchukwu et al., 2015). The relationship between school principals’ social-emotional education leadership and teachers’ organizational trust and job performance has also been explored (Sezer & Uzun, 2020).
