If you are quoting three lines or less from a source, you may include the passage, in quotation marks, as part of your text
Nelson Mandela, after serving twenty six years in prison, said, upon his release “I do not have time to be bitter or angry but choose to seek reconciliation and extend forgiveness.” Many believe that this statement prevented violence in South Africa.
If you are quoting four lines or more from a source, it should be inserted 10 spaces and single spaced.
Nelson Mandela, upon being elected President of South Africa delivered a speech in which he set out the principles he would follow:
The first principle that I will follow is to treat all individuals the same irrespective of whether they are black, white, brown, yellow or green. The second principle that I will follow is to only look forward and not spend time worrying about the past.
The speech was received with great enthusiasm.
If you wish to omit part of a passage that you are quoting, you need to indicate the omission by 3 spaced dots enclosed in a bracket:
Representatives from certain African countries stated that they “disagreed with many of the arguments […] but would reluctantly vote for the proposal.”
