Pre-writing: After choosing your characters, develop a working thesis statement (argument)
that clearly states your purpose, focusing on how the lure of power is related to ambition,
greed, and corruption. This is a process essay that will be written in and out of class.
Writing: Create an outline for your essay. After, type a rough draft that follows MLA formatting
using a Google doc. Properly cite all quotes or any paraphrasing.
Editing: You will give and receive peer feedback.
Submission: Implement the content and language suggestions from the feedback you
received and upload the final draft to Managebac on a timely basis.
Assessment Rubric: You will be graded on Criterion A, Criterion B, and Criterion D
Criterion A:
i. Your thesis statement and all your supporting points in your body paragraphs show strong
analytical skills by providing an in-depth argument on your main topic.
ii. You are able to describe and explain the effect of Shakespeare’s authorial choices on the
audience. Your explanation is detailed and convincing.
iii. Main ideas are supported with references to the text, explanatory detail and correct use of
literary terminology.
iv. Your connections between your two characters are strong, and they show a perceptive
understanding of how they relate to your argument.

Criterion B:
i. Your central argument is effectively organized by having a clear thesis statement, and well-
constructed body paragraphs, following the PEEATL format. You use various devices to have
cohesion between and within body paragraphs.
ii. You develop a persuasive argument from your thesis statement. Ideas build on each other. You
use transitions and comparative language effectively.
iii. You embed well-chosen quotations from the play effectively. You consistently follow MLA
formatting and citations, and format for drama.
Criterion D:
i. You write in a variety of sentence structures and use literary terms
ii. When writing your comparative essay, you continually use a high academic register and style
iii. Your writing contains very few or no errors in grammar, syntax and punctuation. Any errors
are not intrusive.
