Classroom Observation & Lesson Plan Analysis Paper: You will observe for 10 hours in an elementary classroom. This assignment will provide an opportunity to closely
examine the teaching and learning of mathematics in one classroom, for evidence of CCSSM Standards for
Mathematics Practice enactment, and analyze lesson plans for. This assignment has two parts. Part one will focus
on evidence of the Standards for Mathematical Practice from your observations.
Are the CCSSM SMPs explicitly mentioned in class? Do you see evidence of the SMPs around the room?
Provide detailed examples of evidence of the CCSSM Standards for Mathematical Practice using the Mathematical
Practices Observation Tool (Hancock, 2011). Where do you see the SMP during instruction? List detailed
examples of student work, conversations, activities, etc. that exemplify your SMP. Provide detailed examples of
evidence of CCSSM Standards for Mathematical Practice:
Write a 3-page reflective paper that highlights at least 2 Standards for Mathematical Practice that were evidenced
during your observations. In the paper, you will identify and describe the chosen SMPs that were evidenced during your observations. You will briefly describe the lessons/activities and then focus on what you learned about
each SMP. You will describe the standard(s) and provide examples of how students engaged in that practice, using
details to support your claims. Make at least 2 connections to course readings, discussions, and or activities in the
paper.
