TFA Writing Assessment #2 – Focus on theme and commentary
Sophmore English
Spring 2024
We have explored the perspective of two different African writers, Chinua Achebe and Leopold Sedar Senghor regarding the interaction of different cultures, with a focus on Africa’s interactions with the culture of Europe. In addition we have considered Achebe’s choice to specifically reference a poem from the Western culture, “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats.
Write an essay that makes connections between the poems (“Prayer to the Mask” by Leopold Sedar Senghor and “The Second Coming” by William Butler Yeats) and Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart. Refer to your annotations and class notes. You may use your SpringBoard and notebook.
What similarities in theme or central idea did you notice? What differences?
- Include specific quotes or details from the poems and the novel to support your claims. For the poems include line numbers in parentheses at the end of the sentence, for example “Masks.” (Senghor, line 2). For the novel, refer to specific scenes or events, even if you do not have the page number.
- Explain how specific words in the poems and the novel relate to each other and show the similarity between the themes.
- Use a coherent organizational structure and employ transitions effectively to highlight similarities and differences.
You will be assessed on your ability to
- Make specific connections in theme or central ideas across the 3 texts, highlighting similarities and differences.
- Connect your claim and evidence with well-developed original commentary in a paragraph of your choosing.
