Key Idea:
“Gender, race, ethnicity, class, nationality, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, and language are all significant social categories by which people are recognized by others. Indeed, on the basis of these categories alone, others often think they know who we are and how we should behave.” (Kirk & Okazawa-Rey, p. 8).
Instructions:
Reflect on this quotation in light of all the readings in the module. Recall a specific incident (such as a brief interaction) or a long-term interaction (such as in a classroom or employment situation) in which a person or group recognized and responded to you primarily as a representative of one of the following “social categories”: gender, race, ethnicity, social class, nationality, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, or language.
- In one to three sentences describe the situation and indicate which social category (from the list above) affected others’ responses to you.
- How did their perception of you in that particular social context differ from how you perceived yourself? (1 or 2 sentences)
- How were you affected by how people behaved toward you? (1 or 2 sentences)
- Identify a citation (maximum 2 sentences) from the Johnson article, the Tatum article, or the Kirk and Okazawa-Rey article that is relevant to the experience you described. Include the quote here, using the appropriate format for quotations. (Note: You may not use the quotation from Kirk and Okazawa-Rey that is included in the assignment instructions.)
- In a few sentences, explain how the quote is pertinent to the situation you described.
- Make a direct and concise argument.

- Click on the appropriate discussion forum title to participate in the week’s discussion forum.
- Press Create a Thread.
- Name your Subject (FirstName Last Name – Topic). Ex: (John Doe – Week1).

You must post your initial response and reply to two (2) of your colleagues before midnight by the time indicated in the deliverables section for the current week in Blackboard.
- Discussion posts are meant to be an interactive discussion. Lack of specifics in your responses will result in a failing grade. Each response post should be no less than 200 words, with one citation (No quotes).
- Your response posts to your peers MUST include specific information from their initial post… it cannot just recap the readings, or the topic.
- CREATE UNIQUE REPLIES! if you use the same reply for both response posts, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
- No response posts, incomplete or partial responses will be a minimum 30-point deduction from your grade.
- Errors such as missing (or incomplete) citations, references, incorrect citations and/or references, no title for reference list, incorrect word count, multiple grammar, or spelling errors, etc., will be a minimum 15-point reduction.
- Please review APA7, as citation errors will result in significant point deductions. If you do not thoroughly review APA7, you will not do well on the discussion assignments. If you do not have a good reference guide for APA7 rules use Purdue OWL.
- Discussion assignments submitted more than 24 hours after the deadline will not be graded. Your grade on the assignment will be zero. See Absence/Sick Policy for allowable exceptions.
- Plagiarism. You will be severely penalized for using the work of others without giving proper credit. If you do not understand the difference between quoting and paraphrasing, please thoroughly review APA7.
- If it is suggested that you contact the writing center, you should do so immediately. Not consulting the writing center could significantly impact your grades.
