Biography
To maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Nursing
and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code (Nursing and Midwifery
Council, 2018), the patient will be identified as “Jenifer” and
“Sarah”. Consent was consistently obtained from the patient while providing
care and prior to composing this essay.
Jenifer a 32-year-old woman was brought to the
hospital by her concerned roommate “Sarah” name (actual name withheld) who is
aware of Jenifer’s mental health history as they have discussed it openly
together before and also share a deep and supportive friendship. She
noticed the gradual change in Jenifer’s behaviour and mood, leading to her
decision to seek help for Jenifer during this crisis. Jenifer had been
experiencing symptoms of depression for the past year, including persistent
sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite, and social withdrawal, these are
depression symptoms as suspected by Jenifer (Almeida et al.,
2022).
Jenifer
was initially assessed in the emergency department. Given the severity of her
depressive symptoms and the presence of passive thoughts of self-harm, the
medical team decided to admit her to the hospital’s psychiatric ward for
further evaluation and treatment. She was directed to the hospital’s inpatient
psychiatric unit, where she could receive specialized care for her mental
health condition. She was later diagnosed with major depressive disorder. As documented
by Tiago (2023), major depression is characterized by a range of symptoms
including anhedonia, hopelessness, reduced motivation, insomnia or hypersomnia,
weight gain or loss, mood instability, irritability, despondency, sadness and
suicidal ideation (Tiago, 2023).

It would be good to also consider – if Jenifer is working or studying at the moment, or has been previously? Does she has any connection with family?

This is a a suitable case study to use
