The Impact of the Internet, globalisation and consumerism on the music festival industry

This is for my communication and media subject at uni. Essay 1350 Words 


The qustion i am answering is: 

The internet has transformed economic processes and consumer
behaviour by changing the way we trade and transact, for example, by shopping
or banking online, and how we consume media content. Choose ONE media industry,
e.g. music, news/journalism, film, TV or video games and explain how the
related practice of listening to music, accessing news, watching
movies/television or gaming online, has been shaped by globalisation and
consumerism. Your answer should demonstrate both the positive
and negative effects of these concepts for consumers.

The music festival industry is the industry i have chosen for this topic.

staple in global lifestyles, celebrated by music enthusiasts of all ages and
tastes. Whether it’s the electric atmosphere of a major city festival or the
intimate charm of a regional gathering, the popularity of music festivals around
the globe continues to soar, drawing people together in a shared experience of
joy and community.

to explore the impact of
the internet, globalisation, and consumerism on
music festivals, specifically in Australia.

 

(Hartley) (rereference) describes globalisation as the extension of cross-border economic
connections, resulting in increased societal and economic integration globally.
More broadly, is it frequently equated with the market economy or capitalism.

 

(Hayes, 2021) Consumerism
is the belief that increasing the consumption of goods and services is
inherently desirable and essential for personal well-being and happiness.
Economically, it aligns with Keynesian ideas that consumer spending drives the
economy and is vital for growth. However, some criticize consumerism for
causing individual anxiety and weakening social cohesion

Globalisation significantly influences music festivals
in Australia, shaping their economic, cultural, and social aspects. (

diversity

 

Following (Hartley’s) description of globalisation, Australian music festivals,
similar to Splendour In The Grass, Pitch Music and Arts, Strawberry Fields,
Ultra Music Festival and Rabbits Eat Lettuce bring diverse musical acts from
around the world to perform. This exposure to international artists enriches
the cultural experience of the festivals, allowing attendees and artists to experience
a variety of genres and networks they might not encounter otherwise, fostering
a celebration of global music, art, and dance, reflecting a broad collection of
cultural influences. This facilitates an ongoing dialogue between global and
local cultures, where music festivals are able to combine both local and
international traditions, forming unique cultural hybrids where
acts might share the same stage, fostering cultural
exchange and mutual appreciation.

 

Marques (2014)
explains that festivals can contribute to the development and protection of
cultural heritage, as well as celebrate contemporary creativity and the history

Country, featuring a captivating musical piece. Indigenous culture holds a
significant role in Australia’s history and heritage, and it is essential for
