  4. Four Tips for Writing a Literature Review’s Introduction, Body and Conclusion

As you review the journal articles, texts and manuals you select on the particular topic of interest please consider the following:

  • How are the sources similar in terms of methods, philosophies, claims and reliability?
  • How do they differ?
  • Are there gaps in the research that require further study?
  • Are there particular issues or problems that stand out?

Introduction (1-2 pages): Explain why you are writing the review. Why does someone care about the topic in interpersonal communication that you have chosen? Why do you care about the topic? Convince the reader that this is something significant. Make some central claims about the current state of literature like trends or debates regarding your topic.

Body (3-4 pages): Organize the body of the paper by common denominators among sources like methods, conclusions, philosophical approaches or even timing/chronology.

Conclusion (2-3 pages): Summarize the most significant contributions to the issue discussed. Connect the literature you reviewed in a wider context of your topic (the discipline of mental wellness, the profession of education, overall classroom pedagogy, violence prevention etc.)   Point out flaws or gaps in the research.

Citations (APA Style): You must use a minimum of five peer reviewed journal articles, four of which must have publication within the past 10 years.

Be sure to use the PO Library as a resource to gather your information. In addition, the CARE Learning Center is there to provide support with academic writing. Download and use the Undergraduate APA 7 TemplateLinks to an external site. for this assignment.

Note: Since this paper must be written in current APA formatting it must have a title page and reference section. No abstract is required. Be sure to check grammar and readability because points will be deducted for if there are readability issues. Finally, the TurnItIn Score (that is used to identify possible intentional or unintentional plagiarism) must be 25% or below. Feel free to reach out to the librarian ( or https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines for APA help) and Writing Center (writing support) for assistance.

Please note that there is a difference between a literature review and an annotated bibliography:

  1. literature review is a summary about a specific topic while an annotated bibliography is an alphabetical list of the sources of information for the topic with a brief summary and analysis.
  2. While an annotated bibliography contains facts about the sources of information, the literature review contains a summary, evaluation, and analysis of a particular topic or argument.
  3. The annotated bibliography informs readers about the accuracy, relevance and quality of the source while the literature review informs the readers about the topic’s pros and cons and how the author’s insights differ from, and conform to, previous arguments about it.
  4. The literature review mostly comes from an annotated bibliography but unlike it, it can be a literary work by itself.

The goal is to use very few direct quotes, and rather paraphrase and include that reading into your final paper. This will mean that you will avoid plagiarism. For APA support see the following short videos:
