The dangers of Assault Weapons and should legislation be passed to regulate their use, or should they be banned outright

(Overview)

Firearm control and its impact on public safety has been an ongoing debate in the U.S. for years. Liberal and conservative parties in the United States have fought amongst themselves for decades on passing legislation that would change gun laws. Many liberal parties view that firearms, particularly assault style weapons, should be banned outright, while conservatives tend to want as little restriction as possible pertaining to gun rights. The issue is, are the laws being passed, or the ones that could eventually be passed,  currently doing anything to lessen gun related crimes in the United States (Jacobs, 2015).

(Thesis)

In this paper I will show that if some compromises in the law are made, particularly, pertaining to assault style weapons gun related, crimes in the U.S. will significantly drop. Laws have been passed in our own country in the past that were successful in lowering mass shootings, specifically former president Bill Clinton’s “Federal Assault Weapon Ban”.  If the government banned assault style weapons, the gun related crimes in the U.S., particularly mass shootings, would be lower (Korhonen, 2023). (I created this thesis but please revise or completely change it to fit the paper you create)

 (Problem statement)

For example, a large amount of mass shootings in the U.S. have been perpetrated by an individual using an assault style weapon. The most common weapon used during a mass shooting have been handguns however the number of shooters using rifles has been rising over the years (Korhonen, 2023). This is because of the high capacity magazine and its relative ease of use. The U.S. government is currently combating gun violence and is implementing some firearm control. According to the Office of Gun Violence Prevention the Biden administration has implemented the “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act”. The goal of this act is “keeping guns out of the hands of individuals under 21 who are prohibited from purchasing firearms” (The United States Government, 2023). Another goal of this act is to empower the Justice Department with new options to prosecute firearms traffickers, and to improve the access to mental health services.

Who: The citizens of the United States of America are the people being affected by the lack of regulation of assault style weapons.

What: Specifically assault style weapons, cause greater casualties in these types of mass shootings.

When: The focus should  primarily be on the present while also talking about former legislation and laws in the past. Discuss mass shootings using these firearms in the past few years.

Where: The United States of America is where the issue takes place, Also address other countries that have regulations in place to help argue my point. ( Try to narrow the “Where” down to a few states the U.S. where attacks or shootings using assualt weapons occured, as the U.S. as a  whole is too broad).

How: Greater regulation or even a ban on assault style weapons would lessen mass shootings in the U.S. and reduce innocent lives being lost.

Why: Mass shootings have increased in recent years and when assault style weapons are used they cause greater casualties this is due to the ease of use, large magazine size, and type of ammunition used. ETC.
