Human development is a complex process that comprises various dimensions including cognitive, physical, social, and emotional. From this term’s discussions, we looked into various aspects of human development and transformation, and among them, all three were most relevant and left me by surprise. These were the plasticity of the brain, the effects of early experiences, and the role of culture. Human development is a long process that encompasses change and adaptation. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to rewire itself and this is something that captivated me. From the course, I learned about the human brain and how it remains malleable throughout life. As we continue to live, our nerves strengthen and weaken depending on our experiences, learning, and environmental factors. Normally, our brains remodel themselves even after injuries. This new understanding shows the significance of lifelong learning and the chances for growth even during tough times. I also learned how childhood experiences may have an impact on later development. During early childhood and infancy, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning foundations are set and anything that happens during this period may not be easily erasable (Doidge, 2007). Growing in stimulating environments, and having secure attachments promotes healthy human development. Therefore, individuals who have tough childhood experiences are more likely to face long-term effects on mental health, physical health, and behavior. Hence, early identification of early experiences highlights the need for supportive interventions and preventive measures. When it comes to human development, culture is another aspect I enjoyed learning about as norms, values, and practices are among the many things that affect how people perceive themselves, how they relate with others, and how they handle life challenges. What amused me is that cultural diversity is not only about surface-level differences but also a factor that affects individuals’ emotions, cognition, and behavior.
In summary, human development is a process that arises from various threads including environment, biology, culture, and even relationships. The terms discussion reminded me of what we share as humans and the connections we have with each other based on our stories and life experiences.
