In long term care elderly residents, how does family visits compared to no family visits affect the mental health and social isolation of this population within one year?
Isolation in long-term care facilities can have negative effects on residents, particularly in the context of the VA healthcare system. Although isolation is implemented mainly for infection control and safety, it can lead to severe social isolation, loneliness, and depression among residents. From a nursing perspective, isolation protocols can disrupt routine resident quality of life and meaningful interactions with others, which are crucial for monitoring their mental and emotional states. There needs to be further discussion and a balance in policy in the VA healthcare system in order to protect the vulnerable and mitigate safety among this vulnerable population. Although this was an issue prior to the pandemic, social isolation was further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. And in return, family was not considered as essential members of the care team, a set back that needs to be both considered and changed moving forward.
