TOPIC: Choose one myth or ritual and explain how it relates to the lived context of a particular group of people. The paper should address the following: (These are guidelines and suggestions. Not every paper needs to answer each question.)
- How does this group of people enact this ritual/myth?
- How does it frame their lived experience?
- How do they keep tradition alive?
- How does it impact their social standing?
- How does it set them apart as a group?
These should be analytical papers that should posit an argument that attempts to prove a point. Students should use course readings to form their analyses, but they should also use external sources to supplement their research. Usually, 3-4 sources (above and beyond journalistic and encyclopedic articles available on the Internet) effectively used will be sufficient. Students should independently research their particular myth/ritual using scholarly sources, and use course readings as supplementary materials as they are useful.
The ritual or myth can be one that we have discussed in class, but it does not have to be. Just be sure to be specific about where and when the myth or ritual is enacted by people. No myth or ritual exists outside of a social context.
