How
British food and farming contributes to the UK economy
(countrysideonline.co.uk)
The importance of the agricultural industry to the UK economy
isn’t just that they produce food for the country it is also they have created the
land and the culture that comes with it and that what tourists love to see and
what countries know us for. Over 70% of our land in the UK is being used by
farmers[1],
if there weren’t any farmers we would only have big cities and a mass overload of
bushes and trees. Furthermore, the Agriculture industry of the largest
manufacturing sector and contributes over £120 billion to the country’s economy
by manufacturing food and drink, also 65% of farms in England provided £740 million
in 2018/19 to the UK economy by running other enterprises such as wedding
venues, farm shops, local parties, competitions and B&Bs[2].
The aim for this essay is to use my experience of having a
family farm and to conduct research to explore the economic arguments for and
against regulation in this sector. The importance of the agriculture industry
is far greater than food production, therefore, when discussing the arguments for
regulation I will be researching topics such as market stability, public goods
and externalities, market failures and consumer protection and confidence. When
discussing arguments against regulation I will be discussing topics such as
economic burden on producers, Government intervention and Global trade
competitiveness.
