Weight
gain
As I mentioned about my uncles needs, he
gained weight shortly after the divorce due to eating a lot of unhealthy food on a daily basis and
also stopped exercising for a long period of
time after being very active before. Therefore, my uncle needed support with
how to eat healthy and lose weight to be able to become healther and avoid
potential medical problems in the future. My uncle had access to his GP
surgery (formal) which was local to his house
which is usually the first place to visit when having any concerns about
medical issues related to diet and lifestyle. My uncle could have booked an
appointment to see his doctor to be able to monitor his weight and give him
suitable advice on how to eat healthy and manageable exercise routines. After looking on the website of my
uncles registered GP (Outwood Medical Centre), I can see that you can contact
the medical centre by telephone to book an appointment or create an account on
their website to book appointments. This could lead to the appointment with the
doctor to address the issues with my uncles health or potential in the future based
on his eating and exercise patterns.
The doctor could provide my uncle with leaflets on how to eat healthy and how
to do different types of exercise to keep motivated. The medical centres website also provides a section
where you can access health information where it gives free advice and guidance
on many elements of lifestyle to promote a good diet and regular exercise to
avoid gaining weight. This
will help my uncle get back on track with his diet and exercise to lose
weight as he will listen to professionals who are well trained in this. Also,
having advice and plans written infront of you on leaflets can help you to
start doing something about it quicker rather than not knowing where to start.
The doctor may also guide my uncle to the NHS
website (formal) where again there are numerous
pieces of advice and support for healthy eating and exercise such as the ‘live
well’ page on their website.
Another type of support for my uncle
which helped him was getting support from his family and friends (informal) at the time where he was
struggling to look after himself. His family especially noticed that he was starting
to live a very unhealthy lifestyle compared to before his divorce and became
worried for his future and his health if this continued. They were very
supportive of him and understood that he was going through a difficult time so
tried to help in various ways to be able to contribute to trying to steer him away from
continuously bad food.
Instead, his family would cook healthy meals
and either take this around in tubs for him to eat or invite him round to their
house to share meal
times with them. At first he didn’t want to go round to their
house and was happy to be alone and only eat takeaways and sugary foods. He
would take food from them if it has been taken around and eventually
he started eat more healthy food from his family. This had a really good
impact on him because it encouraged
him to start to learn how to cook and his family supported him with this and
invited him over or they went to his to teach him different recipes which he
could then cook himself and was able to prepare healthy food which he enjoyed
as well. The most successful recipes which my
uncle learned to cook from and continued this was the BBC food guide with
various diet plans on there and
also the Tesco website. They used this to
help him because this was his local shop where he did his shopping so helped
him to get the correct ingredients to help follow the recipes on the website.
There are also various charities
(charity) which are available to access and gain support from which helps to
guide people in the right direction to improve their health through their diet
and lifestyle. Because these are free to access and use and there are also groups which run on various days of
the week which are run by volunteers to help
these run for people in need of support
it could have really helped my uncle to socialise again and find others who may have
been going through the same thing to share his feelings with. After researching charities in the
Wakefield area about diet and lifestyle called Live Well Wakefield, there are some charities which offer lots of good advice which can
be accessed online or offer face to face sessions for peoples preference. It gives advice on how
to start with diet and exercise. It provides interactive workshops
on the website which you can read through and follow. There are also other charities which
run on a larger scale nationally to offer support to much more people across
the country rather than just specific areas such as the
British Heart Foundation.
However, they do also offer advice in person and you can search from areas near you
to attend if this is something you want to do. Alternatively, there are many pages on the website with
plans and steps to leading healthy life
styles and ideas of how to make a start
and implement new things gradually to promote having a healthy heart and avoid
medical issues. I
think my uncle would have benefited from these as they are easily accessible
and have so many ways to be able to start leading a healthy life style
again so he would have had some control and choice of how to do this rather
than being told what to do which may have made him feel pressured and
embarassed.
