Topic #1: What is medical care discrimination and how does this affect the LGBTQ community?

Topic #2: What special health needs do LGTB patients have?

  • What special health needs do LGTB patients have?
  • Currently, what percent of the population identifies as LGTB? Members of the LGTB community come from all cultures, from all walks of life, all socio-economic backgrounds, all ethnicities, and all religions.
  • Members of the LGTB are at risk for several health threats. What are these? Some are a result of sexual practices (as with the general population), but the health threats are more significantly associated with structural societal inequities. What have you found in the literature which supports or rejects that idea? 
  • Is there a need for culturally competent healthcare and providers specifically trained to meet this population’s specialized needs? Does your hospital or clinic provide these? What specialized needs might these be? Does your healthcare facility have provider specialists trained specifically to assist the LGTB community such as hormone affirming therapy specialist for example?
  • How might nurses provide culturally sensitive patient care and additionally support the patient’s significant other? What about the rights of the patient’s significant other? If the patient and their partner are not legally married, does the facility respect the patient’s preferences (over the biological family) regarding who can, and cannot, visit them? 
  • Both posts are required to be at least 400-450 words. More words are acceptable.
  • The word count for each topic must be posted at the top of each section.
  • Both postings must contain a minimum of two (2) citations. One citation must be a peer-reviewed scholarly article. 
  • Each post must use a different scholarly article.
  • References used are to be correctly cited within the body of the post.
  • The two (2) references used for each topic are to be placed under the topic they refer to.
