PRP-4015 Truncated Research Report (40%) Guidelines
You are required to write a truncated practical report containing a title page, abstract,
results, and discussion sections along with a reference section, and appendix. Please note
that you pay particular attention to the presentation of your report. This report is worth
40% of the total mark for the module. Ensure that the report is correctly formatted in APA
style. Getting the presentation right may require rewrites, so be prepared and plan your
time carefully.
There is only one dataset to use for this semester. This data is available in the Truncated
Research Report folder under the Assessments tab on Blackboard. You should use this data
to conduct a two-way between-groups ANOVA.
The Dataset:
The dataset is part of data collected by Project Implicit. The dependent variable in the
dataset is a measure of implicit bias. You can learn more about implicit bias on this
webpage: https://openpsychologydata.metajnl.com/articles/10.5334/jopd.ac
I would also suggest that you take the test yourself at this link to see what the test entails
and how the data is collected: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html
The dataset provided here is from the Race IAT, where participants were asked to categorise
White and Black faces as well as positive and negative words. The variables are as follows:
Independent Variable: Month – 3 levels
 May – data collected from 1-5 May 2020 – IAT scores before George Floyd’s murder
 June – data collected from 1-5 June 2020 – IAT scores immediately after George
Floyd’s murder
 September – data collected from 1-5 September 2020 – IAT scores a few months
after George Floyd’s murder
Independent Variable: Race of Participant – 8 levels
Independent Variable: Political Identity of Participant – 7 levels
Dependent Variable: IAT D Score
 Ranges from -2.00 to +2.00
o Scores between -0.15 and +0.15 are indicative of no association bias
o Scores between ±0.15 and ±0.36 are indicative of slight association bias
o Scores between ±0.36 and ±0.65 are indicative of moderate association bias
o Scores between ±0.65 and ±2.00 are indicative of strong association bias
 Whether the score is positive or negative determines who association bias favours
o Negative scores indicate positive association bias in favour of black people
o Positive scores indicate positive association bias in favour of white people.
Choosing Your Analysis
Choose the data that are interesting to you and generate a specific hypothesis based on
those data. You should conduct a literature review to justify your research question. You will
need to provide some information about the IAT in your report. You will need to conduct a
single two-way between-groups ANOVA and report the results.
Your report should contain the following elements:
Title Page
The title should be on a separate page along with the word count. See APA manual Section
2.3 & Figure 2.1 for examples of an APA formatted title page. However, do not include your
name, as the reports are marked anonymously. You must have a sensible descriptive title
(not ‘Research Report’).
Abstract (250 words max)
The abstract should also be on a separate page and has the heading “Abstract”. The abstract
has to briefly cover all “major components” of the project, i.e., background, summary of
main results, and main conclusions. Note that this should be the LAST thing you write when
writing a research report as it is a summary of the whole report. See APA manual for an
example.
Results (2 pages max)
This section should include the descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) for
each variable and the results of the appropriate inferential statistical test (e.g., ANOVA). All
statistics should be presented in APA format.
You should also include a table OR a figure which illustrates your findings. Please use either
a table or a figure (e.g. a bar chart), but not both. Tables or figures must be appropriately
labelled and formatted according to APA standards, i.e. please do not copy and paste them
directly from SPSS. Please place the figure directly into the results section, not in an
appendix, and refer to it in the main text.
Discussion (2 pages max)
This section follows on from the Results with no page break and has the heading
“Discussion”. First, you should describe the results in relation to the research question you
set out to investigate. Are your findings what you expected?
Then, broaden your discussion to consider how your results relate to previous research and
theory. Are your findings consistent / inconsistent with the results of previous studies?
Explain how your findings advance scientific knowledge.
