Ten pages expected, fifteen acceptable. Choose a specific interpretation of an epic, or interpret an epic using class discussion and your own insights. Justify your position with text evidence and research. What has a specific character to do with the overall theme of the epic? How do the interactions between the characters support your hypothesis? What symbolism can you use to defend your position? You need an overall interpretation of one of the epics as well as a specific character on which to concentrate (Do not use any character you have already used). You will need to use five sources of research (articles on the epic) outside of the text (Iliad,Odyssey,Aeneid). Use text evidence as well: citations from at least one passage within the epic itself. I recommend that you limit the citations from the text itself (Choose a primary-source citation that is central to your idea and discuss it. Do not cite several passages.) Concentrate on your own interpretation; do not retell the story; do not use the word “this” alone. Due at the time of the final exam, August 10th.

You have the right idea for a paper here. Incorporate the sources into your paper and comment a bit more on fire as a symbol of anger. You could also use the crucible of beauty and/or the rites of passage to talk more in-depth about Achilles or about another central character. Keep in mind that you are commenting. Make points through scholarship and do not fill the paper with citations in order to fill in space. You are not guilty of padding in your draft; I am simply advising against it. Your topic is sound, but perhaps a bit more depth and detail will enhance the substance of your paper. You are on the right track.
