Gun violence in the United States has become a common occurrence in recent years, and is a leading cause of premature death. In 2021, gun violence resulted in 48,830 deaths, the highest number on record, and 1 person was killed every 11 minutes. In 2022, firearm injuries were among the five leading causes of death for people ages 1-44. Gun violence also has a significant economic impact, costing the U.S. economy an estimated $53.77 billion in lost wages in 2022. 

Here are some other statistics on gun violence in the United States:
  • In 2021, 80% of murders and almost 55% of suicides involved a firearm, the highest percentages since at least 1968 and 2001, respectively
  • In 2022, there were 46 school shootings, more than any year since 1999
  • As of 2024, Mississippi had the highest gun violence rate per 100,000 residents at 29.7%, while Rhode Island had the lowest at 3.1%
  • The Deep South is the most deadly large region for gun violence at 15.6 per 100,000 residents, followed by Greater Appalachia at 13.5 

Some experts say that gun violence is a public health emergency, and that a comprehensive public health approach is necessary to address the issue. 
In 2022, 48,117 people died by firearms in the United States — an average of one death every 11 minutes. Over 26,993 people died by firearm suicide, 19,592 died by firearm homicide, 472 died by unintentional gun injury, and an estimated 649 were fatally shot by law enforcement.
