The ANA federal advocacy issue that you select for this assignment will be same ANA federal advocacy issue that you will focus on for the entire course, and it will also be the focus of the Professional Communication: Call to Action Letter (due in week 9), which will begin work on in week 7.  See the Course Timeline for all related assignments, as well as tasks necessary for success.

Skills:  The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills, which are essential for success in your field and program:

1. For this essay, you are required to:
   • Focus on one of the topics/issues listed below, which are federal nursing issues that are a part of the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) advocacy efforts.  Below, each approved topic is listed, along with the ANA’s most recent statement on it.

      • ANA Position Statement: “As the largest single group of health care professionals, nurses regularly witness the trauma that gun violence inflicts on victims, families and communities. [In response], . . . the American Nurses Association has and will continue to be engaged in efforts to prevent and reduce gun violence . . . ANA issued a call to action to Congress and policymakers to take swift action to curb gun violence.”

      • ANA Position Statement: “Appropriate nurse staffing is achievable, and the ANA supports all nurses in advocating for the staffing solutions they find most suitable in their practice settings.”

      • ANA Position Statement: “Nurses are less healthy than the average American.  Research shows that nurses are more likely to be overweight, have higher levels of stress, and get less sleep . . . Healthy nurses are great role models for their patients, colleagues, families, and neighbors.”

      • ANA Position Statement: “Standard 18 of the Standards of Professional Nursing Practice found in Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 4^th Edition, reminds us that “The registered nurse practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.”  This can prove difficult with healthcare’s utilization of: fossil fuels for power and transportation, single use devices and goods, toxic chemicals and materials, and planet-unfriendly sourced foods.  Healthcare’s multiple waste streams compound the issue further.”
