Read Chapter 1 in Everything is an Argument.

The purpose of this reflective journal is to help you connect your personal experiences with arguments to the concepts of argumentation we will explore throughout the course. By reflecting on these experiences, you can gain insight into how arguments shape your thinking, decisions, and interactions with others.

Prompt:

In your reflective journal, consider the following questions:

  1. Identify a Personal Experience with an Argument:

    • Recall a specific instance where you were involved in an argument or debate. Describe the situation in detail. Who was involved? What was the topic of the argument? What were the key points of contention?
  2. Analyze Your Role and Response:

    • Reflect on your role in the argument. Were you the one initiating the argument, responding to it, or mediating between others?
    • How did you respond during the argument? Did you use emotional appeals (pathos), logical reasoning (logos), or ethical considerations (ethos)? Provide examples from your experience.
    • How did the other party respond? How did their approach influence the outcome?
  3. Evaluate the Outcome:

    • What was the result of the argument? Did you reach a resolution? Was anyone persuaded? Or did the argument remain unresolved?
    • Looking back, do you think the argument was handled effectively? Why or why not?
  4. Reflect on Learning and Growth:

    • What did you learn about argumentation from this experience? How has it influenced your approach to arguments since then?
    • Consider how this experience might inform your participation in future arguments or debates. What would you do differently next time?
