You must complete a short assignment that describes, assesses, and critiques a government response to a crisis incident and provides an outline of recommended improvements to an emergency operations plan for a similar future incident.
For this assignment, do not use any of the crisis incidents read about in the Howitt and Leonard casebook.
***The incident you report on should be a current or historical event (no more than 5 years old) at the local or state level (no higher than the state level).***
You should use the course materials and external research to help inform your assessment, critique, and recommendations.
Your report should be produced as a 6-8 slide (e.g., PowerPoint) presentation.
Your report should:
Provide a synopsis of the incident. What occurred? When? Who was involved? What parties or agencies? What was the impact of the event? Who was affected, and how was the incident managed?
Describe if/how the event was handled in terms of Crisis vs. Consequence management.
Was the ‘Incident Command System’ used? Was it effective? If not, why do you think it was not?
Was there a local or state response plan? If yes, was it followed? Effectiveness? If no plan, what are your recommendations for plan development?
Conclude with a critical review of the lessons learned and the actions taken at the government level to respond to and recover from the incident.
Be sure to include a slide with references used and how they were used.
