How often have you heard that wars of the 21st century will be fought over freshwater? How often have you heard that there is a world water crisis tied to the fact that we are running out of water? Have you ever wondered what is the empirical basis for such audacious claims? It is my contention that there is plenty of water in the world, that we are not running out and never will run out, but that we face a plethora of problems related to water that are of our own making. Long before we come to use weapons of mass destruction around access to freshwater, it is my contention that there are countless pathways to collaboration. Yes, there will be conflict—there always is—but we generally find a way to cooperate due to the unique qualities of water. As Huub Savenije says, water is not an ordinary good. This week presents a broad overview of the key issues, concepts, theories as they relate to water for security and development.
- explain the link between water use and economic development,
- identify significant challenges related to water use, and
- articulate options for overcoming water resource challenges.
