The Hardships of the New Land and Culture in the Works of William Bradford and Anne Bradstreet

using the outline of the objective is to write a 4-page paper . Write a response to Topic 1. Formulate a clear, strong thesis in response to the chosen prompt. Then, write a 4-page researched critical essay to prove your thesis. Use summary, analysis, and interpretation the the texts to prove your point. Be specific to the readings assigned for this course. Provide examples from the course readings (primary sources) and enhance and support your findings with research from the Central Piedmont databases (secondary sources).

Analyze and research the works of TWO of the authors we have covered thus far:

William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, Mary Rowlandson, Benjamin Franklin, Phillis Wheatley

Write an essay in which you discuss what the chosen authors communicate about the hardships of the new land and the new culture.

4 page minimum not including works cited page

Follow classic essay structure with an introduction that includes a strong thesis, body paragraphs that back up and explain the thesis, and the conclusion which sums up the discussion and ends with a closing idea.

The body paragraphs should include quotes, paraphrases, and/or summaries from the author’s works that were covered in class as well as CPCC database sources to back up/explain/support the thesis.

Follow the example outlines for the essay’s organization:  Topic 1 Outline

Use basic MLA essay structure including a header, heading, title, double spacing, and 12-point Times New Roman or other easily legible font.

Keep historical context in mind. Don’t judge the authors who lived hundreds of years ago by today’s standards; instead, think about what was happening in their time period. Use historically accurate language; for example, feminism did not exist in their time period, so it is not accurate to say that one of the authors was a feminist or wrote about feminist ideas. See lecture for more information.

Use 3-4 sources. Use the textbook as one source. Use at least one source from the Central Piedmont online databases.  Click here to access our library’s English Literature Database Guide.

See the Research and Citation Tab in Brightspace for help with researching and citing your essay.

Use MLA 8 in-text citations and Works Cited format. Use the CPCC library citation guide and/or the Purdue OWL citation information along with the lectures and handouts provided in the course.

Use third person point of view
