Overview
Instructions: Article Reviews
Students will review two empirical studies. These reviews are individual assignments; therefore, each student is expected to research and review their own, separate article.
- Empirical studies are conducted using the scientific method and include parts that explain the participants, method, and results of the study. It also (usually) includes introduction and discussion sections.
- Empirical studies should be published in a journal.
- Research articles using the school library database, Google Scholar, or other reliable source, such as EBSCO or other school library source.
The article reviews (2) should be well-written with limited grammatical errors and include citations in proper APA (American Psychological Association) style. Review the information provided for correct citation format.
Remember that this is an academic research project and as such, should be written using the objective, third person voice. Don’t lapse into language such as “I believe…” or “I think society should…” or even “We need to…”. Opt instead for language such as “Society must…”, “This study has demonstrated that…”, etc.
The article reviews should be brief and original. They will be checked for plagiarism. Students will demonstrate their ability to read an empirical article and summarize it in their own words. The article should include a brief summary of:
- The purpose of the study,
- How it was conducted (participants & what they did or had done to them),
- The results, and
- Importance of the findings/results. (Why does it matter?)
The reviews should be in basic APA formatting: double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins on all sides (top, bottom, left and right). The review should be about one page and the reference should be on its own page. Your references will most likely consist of one: the article you’re reviewing. However, if you cite other sources, you must include those on the reference page.
