Documenting Your Skills and Accomplishments

1. The following scenario is based on real-life current events.

Tara was frustrated, angry, and scared. She had just been notified via Zoom that she had been laid off.

Two years earlier, after graduating at the top of her class and earning a degree in software programming, she was hired by one of the largest social media technology companies in the world as a product developer. Tara was so excited to be starting her dream career in an organization with virtually endless opportunities for growth. In addition, her starting salary was in the six-figure range (over $100,000), and she had even gotten a signing bonus due to pandemic-related growth in the use of social media as people stayed home more.

But now, after the pandemic, her company’s growth had slowed considerably. People were not working from home as much and spending more time outdoors. As a result, they were spending less time on their devices, and this meant trouble for Tara’s company. Her company had hired far more people than it needed during the pandemic, and that meant layoffs.

When Tara got the message that she needed to attend an important meeting, she thought it might be a company-wide announcement of future layoffs or possibly a voluntary early retirement plan. Instead, it was a one-on-one meeting with a representative from human resources telling her that her employment had been terminated. She would be provided only a few weeks of severance pay because she’d been with the company for only a short time, and she was required to return her company-issued laptop and smartphone. Furthermore, her company email address and access to the company’s networks had already been disabled.

Unfortunately, Tara had been keeping all the evidence of her accomplishments, including the many projects she had worked on, on the company’s internal servers. Now, she no longer had access to any of it.

How will Tara be able to show her skills to potential employers without access to these important documents?

In your initial post, please answer the following questions.

  • What should Tara have done differently?
  • Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation to Tara? If so, what did you do?
  • How do you document your skills and accomplishments? How do you store them for safe keeping?
Please respond to the following students:
Nicholas-
  • What should Tara have done differently?-Tara is at fault for relying on her company’s internal servers to store her work and not keeping copies for herself, she could have kept non confidential copies of her work and highlighted her contributions in her portfolio. Tara could also keep a detailed resume that summarizes her work outside of the company.

  • Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation to Tara? If so, what did you do?
-I have never found myself in a situation quite like Tara’s, but sudden situations can happen and transitions in careers or projects are always going to occur so keeping back ups and keeping up with all your accomplishments could come in handy.

  • How do you document your skills and accomplishments? How do you store them for safe keeping?
    – I update my resumes every time I reach a new achievement relatable to the job and I have all my projects on a google drive, while also having bigger projects on my WIX page. I would like to update my LinkedIn account to have all my prior projects and achievements on it
swell, so I really need to make it happen.

Jillian-What a shame for the company to treat her that way, I would be weary about using them as a reference ever in the future. Tara should have kept personal copies of her work accomplishments and projects in a secure, external location, such as a personal cloud storage or external hard drive. This would have ensured that she had access to her work regardless of her employment status. While I haven’t faced a similar situation, I do my best to document my skills and achievements by saving important files digitally, originals, or copies, and updating my resume regularly. This ensures that my work is safe and readily accessible if needed.
Research Analysis
2.The goal of this week’s discussion is to critically analyze and synthesize the sources you have collected for your course project. This “literature review” prepares you to use the source information effectively and ethically in your own writing. For your initial post, complete each of these steps.Select two of your sources that have different perspectives on a controversial aspect of the technology you selected for your course project.Discuss one source’s the perspective on that controversy. Include one brief quotation illustrating that perspective. Put any copied words from the source in “quotation marks.” Cite quotes and any source information that you paraphrase or summarize. Most of the writing should be your own words, not quotations. This APA Style In-Text CitationsLinks to an external site. page shows how to cite sources used in sentences and paragraphs (https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations).

Discuss the contrasting perspective shared by a second source. Be sure to include one brief quotation and cite appropriately.

Compare the arguments and evaluate the sources overall, indicating which you feel is more credible and has a stronger argument. Explain your evaluation.

Provide complete references in APA style for both sources. This APA Style ReferencesLinks to an external site. page shows how to write reference list citations (https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references).

3. For your second post, describe an aspect of your chosen technology on which there is widespread agreement. Show how two or more of your sources have common perspectives on this aspect of the technology. While discussing that commonality, include a brief quotation from each source that illustrates the similar views expressed in each source. Cite both quoted and paragraphrased source information in your writing. End your post with a full reference citation for all sources used in this post.

Please respond to the following student

Chinh- The two sources I chose for my discussion board have one thing in common: they both stress the importance of AI regulation and the need for government intervention to set rules and guidelines for different aspects of medical technology. Zavaleta-Monestel (2024) highlighted, “It emphasizes the company’s commitment to regulatory compliance and quality assurance, ensuring that its AI solutions meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy and underscoring Qure.AI’s dedication to responsible and trustworthy technology” (par. 6). This statement underscores the ethical dedication of an organization to advance technology like AI NLP, ensuring trust and safety for stakeholders and the community they serve. Similarly, Baumgartner (2023) emphasized the safety of AI, stating, “The regulatory challenges of using NLP-based tools like ChatGPT for healthcare decisions highlight the need for clear guidelines and approval processes.” This highlights the necessity for more precise guidelines and approval processes to ensure the safe use of AI in healthcare.

In at least one additional post, respond to at least one other student. Ideally, respond to students whose topic choices are most similar to your own, so that your knowledge of the topic will inform your feedback.
