A PICOT is a mnemonic device used
to describe the five elements of a good clinical question for evidence-based
practice. The elements of a PICOT question are:

          P (Patient, population or problem)

Who or what is the patient,
population or problem in question?

I (Intervention)

What is the intervention (action or
treatment) being considered?

C (Comparison or control)

What other interventions should be
considered? (May be implied)

O (Outcome or objective)

What is the desired or expected
outcome or objective?

T (Time frame)

How long will it take to reach
the desired outcome? (Not always included)

Examples of PICOT Questions

Among women with breast cancer,
does walking 30 minutes each day compared to 30 minutes of quiet time reduce
radiation related fatigue two months after the start of radiation?

Among hospitalized adult
patients, does the use of bedside reporting compared to nurse station reporting
improve patient safety and communication?

In middle-aged men with suspected
myocardial infarction (P), are serial 12-lead ECGs (I) compared with one
initial 12-lead ECG (C) more accurate in diagnosing an acute myocardial

a)      Provide an overview of the

relevance. Narrow down to the specific problem, question, or issue that your
PICOT addresses. Provide context by discussing existing knowledge, theories, or
research gaps that led to the need for your investigation. Include statistics

Select, identify, and relate a QSEN nursing
competency to your research question. Use the QSEN institute to
research the QSEN competencies. However, use Cronenwett et al. (2007) to cite the QSEN
information

your problem statement/research question (PICOT) (Highlight in bold)

Literature
Review

a)      Using a minimum of 5 references from peer
reviewed journal articles written within the last 5 years to create a thematic
literature review.

b)     Analyze the literature, identify and create themes, and
synthesize information from your five sources.

c)      Relate
the problem to an QSEN competency identified in the introduction.

d)     Use APA
level heading to organize the themes

C.   
Case Example

a)     
The
case example must 1) exemplify the problem statement/research question
and 2) be related to the identified QSEN competency.

b)    
The case example should describe the patient’s condition,
disease(s), clinical issues, medications, nursing care, etc.

c)     
Apply the transition theory by Meleis,
as cited in IM (2010) to the case study, a handout for the Transition Theory
