Author’s Craft (Fiction)-Assignment (Word Choice, Plot, Purpose, Audience, Point of View, Perspective)

Instructions:

While you are responsible for knowing what all of these terms mean, you are only required to write about two of them. They will appear on your Unit 2 Test.

Based on your reading, choose TWO of the author’s crafts to write about.


For each type of chosen author’s craft, answer the questions in full sentences with “evidence/quotes” and details (Explain your answer) from the text “Fish Cheeks” and when prompted, you may also be asked to use  “Aesop’s “Lion and the Mouse”.” Use a Word document with MLA formatting to submit your answers for all of author’s craft. Please use the subheadings as titles for each section. You will upload items as one document with subtitles to indicate which TWO author’s craft items you chose to write about.


1) Figurative Language:

  1. Review the story below. This semester it is “Fish Cheeks”
  2. Figurative language and imagery are important parts of a story because they add deeper meaning to a story.
  3. The descriptions of the food are an important part of a story because food is often symbolic and connected to a story’s theme.

Answer all of these questions about the story. 

  • What are THREE instances of figurative language or imagery that you saw in the story, especially pertaining to food?
  • What did the figurative language add to the story? To the theme?
  • Why do you think the author chose that language? What effect does it have on the reader?


2) Plot Diagram:

  2. Plot is the sequence of events in a story, and there are six parts to plot, exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
  • Answer all of these questions about the story’s plot. What is the exposition of the story? Explain your answer.
  • What is the conflict of the story?
  • What is the rising action of the story? 
  • What is the climax of the story? 
  • What is the falling action of the story? 
  • What is the resolution of the story?



3) Purpose:

  • Answer all of these questions about the story. What does the author want me to learn or think as a result of reading this fable? Explain your answer. Think back on your lesson on theme.



4) Audience:

  • Answer all of these questions about the story. Who do you think is the intended audience of this story? Explain your answer.
  • What part of this story is intended to make the audience consider the values presented? Explain your answer.
  • Why is this story important to its intended audience? Explain your answer.
  • How can this story make a difference in the lives of its intended audience? Explain your answer. 



5) Point of View and Perspective:

  2. Answer the following questions about the story. What point of view is the story told in? Explain your answer. (How do you know?) 
  3. Perspective in fiction is a two way street. Authors have their perspectives based on their experiences and it relates to their stories’ themes, and readers have their perspectives based on their experiences, which is connected to their interpretations of stories.
  • Answer all of these questions about the story. What was your perspective of “Fish Cheeks” the first time you read it? Explain your answer. 
  • What is your perspective of “Fish Cheeks” now that you have studied it? Explain your answer.
