Final due WEEK 8 (Sept 30-Oct 4)

Points 125 (plus 25 for the rough draft) 15% of Final Grade

Significance: This essay will be graded face-to-face. You will also take notes on the feedback I give and then extensively REVISE the essay for inclusion in the final portfolio.

  • Students will communicate effectively in writing, demonstrating clear organization and structure, using appropriate grammar and writing conventions. 
  • Students will analyze and draw informed inferences from written texts.

Background

Class, by the time you start compiling this essay you will have:

  1. Reflected on the role of hip-hop in your life
  2. Read Jeff Chang’s essay on the Origin of Hip Hop and learned about key figures
  3. Familiarized yourself with context, analysis, subjectivity, objectivity, exposition, and evaluation
  4. Listened to a podcast addressing an aspect of 50 years of Hip Hop
  5. Watched a documentary that provided insight into the origin of hip-hop

Now it is time to assemble these components into an essay draft based on the details below. Remember, there is an abundance of help in the content section of Units 1 and 2 in D2L as well as the history of help and reminders in the courses’ news section (announcements)

 

Objective

Basically, you are ultimately analyzing the origins of hip-hop as presented in the essay, podcast, and documentary through your own lens. 

Essay Components and Outline

*INTRODUCTION AND EXPOSITION (OBJECTIVE) 

First Paragraph 

Start with an attention-grabber: Provide a vivid detail describing a significant moment you experienced with hip-hop culture. Focus on showing rather than telling. Draw from your work in the Introduction Thread.

Second Paragraph

Transition from your personal story to a memorable moment from hip-hop’s actual origin story. Reference the Chang essay (include citation) Draw from your work in the Origin Homework

Thesis Statement

Explain what taking a deeper look into these origin stories has done for you, and why origins are important. 

Third Paragraph

Provide exposition on 50 years of Hip Hop and your chosen documentary and your thoughts on the their purposes. Draw from the PODCAST  and DOCUMENTARY THREAD questions.

*ANALYSIS PARAGRAPHS (SUBJECTIVE) 

Fourth Paragraph

Using your answer and example from the Podcast Thread, provide a detail from the podcast that illustrates its purpose. Explain whether it achieved this purpose.

Fifth Paragraph 

Using your answer and example from the Documentary Thread, provide a detail from the documentary that illustrates its purpose. Explain whether it achieved this purpose.

Sixth  Paragraph 

Transition to the conclusion using your answers and examples from the Two Threads. You might also pull some information from the Chang essay into this. Address why these works on “origins” are important to hip-hop history.

*CONCLUSION 

Circle back to your personal story and/or a moment from the Chang article to frame your discussion of the podcast.
