Summary, Analysis, and Evaluation My topic is on the negative effects of social media on young children ages 6-12 years old

 Begin your research…

To complete your research paper you will need to review current peer-reviewed resources aligned to your topic. This portion of your paper is called the Literature Review and will include information from (at least) four peer-reviewed articles you will summarize, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize. Prior to completing this assignment, you will first conduct research and identify 4 articles that may potentially be used in your Research Argument.

How to Research

What are Journal Articles?

How to Read Journal Articles?

For this assignment, practice the first 3 writing applications listed below. Select one of the scholarly, peer-reviewed articles that you have found to be used for all 3 writing applications.

Summary – Determining the big picture

For the article you have selected, write a single paragraph of summary. Include at least one direct quotation or paraphrase from your article with proper APA in-text citation. See APA Resources to help guide your writing.

  • What are the main points?
  • What is the big picture?
  • Why is this article valuable in the context of the problem you are researching?

Be sure to compose a fully developed paragraph (and not a list of responses to short answer questions). The questions above are meant as a content guide only.

Analysis – Breaking into component parts

Using the same scholarly article, write a paragraph of analysis of the article. Include at least one direct quotation or paraphrase from your article with proper APA in-text citation.

  • Who is the research focused on?
  • What evidence (studies, data, sources) has the author used to convey the main point?
  • When was the article published? Is the research still relevant or is it outdated?
  • Where was the research conducted? Does it only pertain to a certain region or can the research be applied broadly?
  • Why is this article valuable in the context of the problem you are researching?

Be sure to compose a fully developed paragraph (and not a list of responses to short answer questions). The questions above are meant as a content guide only.

Evaluation – Determining credibility

Continue using the same scholarly article, focus on the evaluation of the article and write a paragraph of evaluation of the article. Include at least one direct quotation or paraphrase from your article with proper APA in-text citation.

An evaluation is your thoughtful judgment about the credibility of a source and the information that source provides. To evaluate something effectively, you have to carefully apply the Critical Thinking questions (below), which you will use again and again in the Child Development program, in your job, and in your everyday life.

  • Why is the information in this article valuable with regard to the problem you are solving?
  • What gives this author the credibility to speak to the problem you are researching?
  • Does the author show any biases? If so, does showing biases make the piece more or less effective?

Be sure to compose a fully developed paragraph (and not a list of responses to short answer questions). The questions above are meant as a content guide only.

Make sure to include a title page & reference page. Elements of this assignment can be used for the Literature Review portion of your Research Argument.

In addition to the feedback you receive from your instructor, you will receive an originality report from Turnitin.  This report will help you check your grammar and citations and help you avoid plagiarism.
