  1. Read the DSM-5-TR chapter on “Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders”.
  2. Read Chapter 5 on “Schizophrenia” in your textbook Mental Health in Social Work.
  3. Watch the following videos portraying Cecilia in 2017 & 2020:
    1. I am Not a Monster: Schizophrenia (2017)
    2. Schizophrenic 2020
  4. Your assignment is to create a Schizophrenia Disorder Education Packet for the family and friends of someone like Cecilia who was just diagnosed with Schizophrenia. In this ‘packet’ there should be information on each of the following:
    1. Information about the illness, including symptoms
    2. Illness management, including evidence-based medication and therapy
    3. What friends and family can do to help their loved one who is in crisis, including suicidal thoughts or threats
    4. What friends and family can do to help their loved one manage stress and deal with emotions
    5. Include a final statement that addresses the importance of exhibiting cultural humility and responsiveness with people who have a psychotic disorder by discussing the influence and effects of bias, power, and privilege.
  5. You can research the web to see what agencies and programs use for some of this information but you MUST give them credit by citing the material and including the web address you where it was retrieved.
  6. Organize your material (one page for each section a – e above) and make it presentable for printing as an Education Packet for families that could be distributed.
