Samuel Museus, “Our Students Face a Mental Health Crisis” (PDF) The Hechinger Report | 16 October 2023

Topic:

write an essay (1400-1700 words) in which you summarize the viewpoints of an author and then respond to those viewpoints by arguing your own position on the topic. Support your argument with specific, purposeful evidence from the text

PROCESS

  1. Read each text to find a conversation/topic you want to respond to

  2. Select one article and draft a summary of the author’s topic/argument

  3. Consider some of the following questions to help you brainstorm about your opinions on the article:

    1. Are there any reasons for me to not trust this author? Is the author credible to discuss this topic?

    2. Does the author say anything that bothers me or interests me?

    3. Does the author make any convincing points?

    4. How can my identity/beliefs add a new/unique viewpoint to this conversation?

  4. Find evidence from the text and 2-3 outside sources that support your viewpoints and create an annotated bibliography to organize those sources

  5. Compose a rough draft of your essay for review

  6. Attend a conference session with your instructor

  7. Revise and edit your essay based on feedback
