Project Focus: American Values – The Rule of Law
Justice, equality, and law and order
in the United States have their roots in the rule of law. In order for social
justice to flourish, it must be imposed even on society’s wealthiest
individuals, according to the principle of equality. The growing political
division in the United States over the past 20 years has cast doubt on this
basic assumption. Following heated ideological debates, many now claim that the
court would be prejudiced and unfair in its conclusion. The
one-vote-per-citizen premise is being called into question by recent changes in
voting laws, immigration policies, and campaign finance regulations.
Racism,
police violence, and governmental corruption have recently skewed public
perceptions of systemic unfairness. The public is becoming more aware of the
need to uphold the rule of law, suggesting that issues of trust and justice are
at risk. Rule of law perceptions are so based on public trust, policies, and
politics. This research will focus on how people’s perspectives shift during
times of massive societal upheaval.
Research Question:
What
changes have occurred in the public’s perception and application of the rule of
law in the United States as a result of its political and legal concretization
throughout the last two decades?
Hypothesis:
The
rule of law has lost confidence among Americans due to political divisiveness
and discriminatory legal trends that have surfaced in high-profile cases during
the last twenty years.
