Adaptive
leadership helps people and organisations to adapt to changing and challenging
environments. According to Heifetz and Laurie there are six key leadership
behaviours:
a.
Get on the
balcony – take a step back from the ‘field of action’ and look from a different
perspective;
b.
Identify
the adaptive challenge – find out what the key challenge is;
c.
Regulate
distress – manage conflict and provide direction for your followers;
d.
Maintain
disciplined attention – encourage followers to remain open to, and learn from,
conflicting points of view;
e.
Give the
work back to the people – empower your followers to solve their own problems
and
f.
Protect
voices of leadership from below – encourage junior staff to share their
concerns and do not dismiss them.
Adaptive leaders therefore
encourage people to deal with problems and adapt to challenges and changes and
they act in relation to the work of followers in the contexts they find
themselves in. By getting on the balcony they mobilise, motivate, organise, orientate
and focus attention.
