First Essay Exam:

In the Introduction to Subjectivity, Mansfield discusses competing (theoretical) models of the “self.” In doing so, he argues that there is a division between theories that view the self as integrated and theories that view the self as fragmented. Focusing on these terms, “integration” and “fragmentation” compare and contrast the model of the self that was created by two (2) of the following theorists: the Enlightenment thinkers (one or some combination of those discussed in Chapter 1), DuBois, or Freud.

**There is no “right” answer: While demonstrating your knowledge of each theory, free yourself to “play” with the concepts of integration and fragmentation.

The answer to the question: ”How long does each essay have to be?” is…. As long as it takes to place all the relevant material into a well-organized, eloquent narrative that demonstrates in-depth understanding of text and care in presentation (proofed for spelling, grammar).

You are, of course, free to read “beyond” the required texts: HOWEVER, what you write must be original—yours and yours alone — and drawn ONLY from the assigned readings. You are free to use quotations from the text to illustrate the points you are making, but please do so sparingly.
