Students should follow the following guidelines when writing the essays:

The reports should be edited in the following format when submit—
Must be typed and double spaced, 11 point font, normal margin

In the upper left hand corner on the first page type your name, the assignment title (concert review report #1…etc), and the date

The reports should include concise historical background of every composer and the works on the program as well as the performers (conductor, soloist, orchestra/ensemble…..).

Use proper musical terminology to describe and evaluate the performance.

Your personal reflection to the music is expected.

Format, grammatical accuracy, punctuation, spelling, choice of words will also be the criteria determine the grade of the essay.

List the name of the performers (ex. Yuja Wang, piano; Gautier Capuçon, cello), and/or the performance group (ex. Austin Symphony Orchestra; Peter Bay, conductor) and the program (title of the musical pieces and its composers) on the front page.

Review every piece on the program.

Citation or quotation is NOT necessary. However, it you do need to cite your sources and quote, please use the Chicago Manual of Style

The report should be 2 to 4 pages in length.

Save your reports in .doc, .docx, or .pdf files and submit through BlackBoard portal. The originally of your reports will be checked by SafeAssign. No more than 20% of the content of your reports should match the sources.
Things you may want to address within your narrative:
- You must use a MINIMUM of ten (10) musical terminologies in your report to describe what you heard and observed. Use the terminologies properly and accurately will help you earn a higher grade.
- Describe the conductor (If there is one), or leader of the group and his/her conducting techniques/patterns, even his/her body languages or how he/she portrayed the spirit of the music during the concert.
- Your favorite, or least favorite, piece in the concert and why. Speak aesthetically…how did it make you feel?
- Discuss the quality of the performance. For instance, when an orchestra plays outdoors, it effects many aspects of the performance including the sound quality. Describe how you feel; the heat, bugs, lighting, venue, etc…might have impacted this.
- The selection of the pieces on the program. What kind of a musical journey these pieces of music took you on?
- Your experience in music is personal and subjective. There is no right and wrong answers. However, you’re encouraged to provide good descriptions and observations to support your thoughts.
You may want to structure your report as follows:
Paragraph #1–Introduction (discuss the venue, group and conductor as well as your expectations for the concert)
Paragraph #2–Musical work #1 – state the title of the musical work and then comment on observations you made about the music(using your musical terms) and the quality of performance.
Paragraph #3–Musical work #2 – state the title of the musical work and then comment on observations you made about the music(using your musical terms) and the quality of performance.
(etc…. covering ALL the musical pieces on the program)
Last Paragraph–Summary (summarize your overall observation about the performers, the performance practices, and the quality of performance).
