For this assignment, you will write an op-ed, which is an informed and focused opinion piece that presents a clearly articulated argument with supporting evidence. The best op-eds are those that demonstrate a deep understanding of the material, identify valid evidence, and develop a clear, original, and thorough analysis. For inspiration, read op-eds in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or the Globe and Mail. Length: ~1,000 words.
Topic: United States (2023): Various cities and states implemented reforms focused on enhancing police accountability, including body camera requirements and community oversight boards.
Include footnotes and references: Your op-ed should apply the concepts learned in class and include references to several academic sources to support your argument.
Be sure to provide a clearly articulated argument with supporting evidence from a mix of 6 different sources that are not class readings (i.e., academic articles, newspaper articles, books, etc.). I posted a sample op-ed and more guidelines on Quercus. Where applicable, refer to class readings and concepts in addition to these 6 sources.
You need to provide full citations when using other peopleβs work/ideas in footnotes. The word count of 1,000 words does not include footnotes and references.Although op-eds do not usually contain footnotes, I want you to use footnotes. In the footnotes, you can document where you found some supporting evidence from scholarship, data, or other newspapers. Choose a major citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) and use it consistently for full references in the footnotes. Please pay attention to style, punctuation, and grammar, and ALWAYS proofread your work before you submit it.
