The assessment is work that communicates the background and context of the topic that you have decided to focus on and includes the justification for your project.
You have a choice of the format that you can submit your work in. This is either:
-
A 1000 word written piece of work
To achieve a pass, you should pay close attention to the following points:
-
Demonstrate in depth knowledge and understanding of your chosen topic and how this relates to your profession and area of practice. Your chosen topic could be related to any of the following broad areas:
-
A specific disease, condition, intervention/treatment option
-
A particular demographic of service user within your area of practice
-
Service provision
-
Workforce related issues
-
Demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the evidence base related to your chosen topic area. This should include key aspects such as the current situation/practice with your chosen focus (ie patient/service user, disease/condition, service provision), discussion of relevant policies/guidelines, alongside relevant research findings. If there is an absence of literature, this should be discussed suggesting reasons for this. This section of work should demonstrate that you have critically evaluated literature to inform your knowledge of your chosen topic.
-
Develop a research question/project aim providing justification in the context of current practice and your critical evaluation of published literature. For some topics/project types it may be appropriate to include an element of reflection as part of this justification. To develop your question you should utilise a recognised tool such as PEO/PICO/SPIDER providing rationale for your selection.
Your research question/project aim should be appropriate for your level of study. It should also be feasible as an early stage career project ie it should not involve large scale intervention, projects that would require significant funding/time/staffing resource.
You should finish your work with a clear statement of your research question/project aim that will form the basis of your Task 2 submission.
-
Communicate work in a clear, balanced, and coherent manner.
For written work, appropriate academic writing conventions should be followed.
For presentations, presentation slides should support the verbal presentation. Verbal presentation may utilise notes, however reading of scripts is not suitable.
Task one
What you need to include
This work should provide detailed information about the background to your topic, context
of service provision/service users circumstances. It should also show
Why conducting or proposing work (i.e. your project) is of value.
Consider the following points:
What is the current situation with your chosen focus i.e. patient/service user,
condition/circumstances, service provision, etc?
What would be the value of exploring this area of practice/service provision further or addressing
any issues?
How would it impact on patients/service users, staff, services, treatment provision?
Are there any key policies/guidelines linked to your topic? What do these say should be
happening?
How does your knowledge of the above points lead to your specific question/aims and objectives?
Conclude your work by stating what type of project you plan to undertake/design to answer your
question.
This leads to your Task 2 work.
