Major Themes of the Quran- Fazlur Rahman Book review: podcast style script and shownotes

Here are the full assignment:

For you please just write a 3-4 page script of what i will recite.  in the podcast as well as shownotes paragraph that hyperlinks any useful links.  Ive attached the book below. in the script please write it podcast style and be creative. take a perspective on the book.

This review takes the form of a podcast, and should respect the conventions of the form: Who you are, what you’re discussing, etc. (“I’m your host X and this is Greatest Hits of Islamic Studies. Today’s episode focuses on Fazlur Rahman and his 1980 classic Major Themes of the Qur’an …”) It should include “show notes” that give a summary of the episode (this can be 1-3 sentences, up to a paragraph—no need to be as elaborate as the New Books Network—Islamic Studies examples ), references for anything you mention (hyperlink is fine), and if you wish, optional links to or references for additional material. Keeping it 101 is a good model here, though yours do not need to be that extensive.

Your audio should be about 8-10 minutes (that’s a written script of 3-4 double spaced pages), but respecting the looser, digressive form of the podcast, you can go for up to 15. If you wish, you can include audio snippets from other places – e.g., if you find a recording of Rahman talking, or another scholar talking about him (if you do this, link to the source!). But it should mostly be you, talking about the book.

The podcast needn’t be argued like a paper. As you’ll recall from our in-class review of podcasts, the format is looser, and you can play with the form so long as there’s a reason you’re approaching it the way you are. The indispensable elements are: a quick account of who the author is, a basic summary of the book, and some indication of why it’s important—you wouldn’t be talking about a nearly fifty year old book if you didn’t think some part of it mattered. The rest of the content is up to you – pick an angle in keeping with your invented podcast (Precursors to Contemporary Muslim Feminism? Influential South Asian Thinkers of the 20th Century? Piety and Progress?) and play around with it.

You can do the podcast in three ways:

  1. Submit a voice memo (you can record this using the app on your phone) and a Word doc with show notes
  2. Using the Kaltura media option in Blackboard, put together a combination of audio and text (the screen can just be an image/title screen that stays static for the duration, until changing to show notes)
  3. Post an audio file with links to Soundcloud or a video to YouTube—both can be private, not showing in search results, just showing for those with the link. You can do visuals on YouTube, but this doesn’t need to be video of you, it can just be an image with podcast title/episode info that stays static for the duration. Show notes should be posted as part of the description so that they can be used to access any sources.

Any of these is sufficient for full credit.

So to recap, essential elements which will get full credit for purposes of our class contract:

Audio recording

Respects the conventions of the form

8-10 minutes long (up to 15)

“Show notes” with episode summary and citations for things you mention.
