Discussion: The Future of Photosynthesis, Fermentation, and Cellular Respiration and Learning Journal: Photosynthesis

1. In Module 4, we are discussing the future of photosynthesis, fermentation, and cellular respiration. For this discussion, you will use the knowledge that you gained from your learning materials this week and your research.

Do an online search for new methods that use an organism’s metabolism for creating energy (fuel). You can focus on photosynthesis, fermentation or cellular respiration. Once you have found an example that you are interested in, go to the Library’s databaseLinks to an external site. and search for an article in an Academic Journal on that same topic. Then do the following:

Write a paragraph (4–6 sentences) on how this species is used to create energy (fuel). Elaborate on what metabolic pathway is used. (2 points)

  • Be specific in your response and focus on the following:
    – What is the name of the organism?
    – What is the metabolic pathway (fermentation, cellular respiration, photosynthesis) that produces the fuel?
    – What is the chemical that is produced in the process? 
    – how can this chemical be used as fuel? 
  • Add the research article in APA format below your paragraph (1 point)
2. For the first contribution, post an entry where you reflect on a concept. The reflection can be any of the following:
    1. A short paragraph (4–6 sentences) on a concept that you felt was tricky and would like to discuss and maybe a question at the end.It can also be on a concept that you find interesting or are curious about.
    2. Post a video that you found online with the reference in APA format with a hyperlink (videos posted in the Canvas course do not count). Add a short explanation (4–6 sentences) on why you think this might be helpful for your classmates.

Photoautotrophs are organisms that convert solar energy (sunlight) into chemical energy (glucose), which is then used to build carbohydrate molecules. The energy that is harnessed from photosynthesis enters the ecosystems of our planet continuously and is transferred from one organism to another. Therefore, directly or indirectly, the process of photosynthesis provides most of the energy required by living things on earth.
