Writing Assignment 1: Discuss a conversation using “First Things First” and “Principles for Speaking”

Discuss a conversation you were a part of where you felt disrespected, unheard. Incorporate elements from Dare to Speak: “Introduction” “Principles for Speaking” and First Things First: Prologue to “First Things First” “We Must Not Be Afraid to Be Free” in your analysis of the situation.

When thinking about the book First Things First book please try to incorporate the following: 1. The idea that more debate might have produced better judgment(s), 2. Had you been listened to more knowledge would have made for more self realization for both parties in the conversation, and 3. Perhaps if had you been heard, or even better had you listened more to the other person you might’ve discovered something about “truth, beauty, or something important about yourself.”

When writing about the book Dare to Speak and the chapter Principles for Speaking perhaps include the following three ideas presented in that chapter: 1. “Don’t assume that your own understanding of the meaning of words and phrases is universally shared” 2. “Unless you have full control over your audience assume that they may encompass a wide range of experience and viewpoints.” 3. “… Virtually anything can be expressed if you take the time to find the right words.” (500 words)
