  • Climb the Ladder of Abstraction

    1. Understand the literal/surface information of the poem: who, what, where, when.
    2. Identify and explore: Setting, Character, Conflict, and Narrator/Speaker/Poet.
    3. Focus on the key details/devices: form, rhetoric, syntax, diction, symbol, connotation. 
    4. Look for patterns: repeated formats, rhyme, patterns of sound, visual patterns, meter.
    5. “So what?!” Analyze for effect: How do these elements create meaning or convey the concerns/themes of the poem?
    6. Interpret: Make a claim about the larger significance/themes/meaning of the poem
