This term presented significant challenges as I navigated through my core nursing classes, which included pharmacology and professional nursing. I did not have a skills lab class this term. Both subjects required a deep understanding of difficult concepts that initially seemed overwhelming and impossible to understand. Pharmacology, in particular, was challenging due to the volume of information, including drug classifications, mechanisms of action, and side effects. Additionally, the professional nursing course demanded a deeper understanding of the ethical and leadership aspects of nursing, pushing me to better my understanding of the profession of nursing and healthcare in general beyond clinical skills.
One of the most difficult challenges I faced was the fast pace of both classes and trying to keep up. The rigorous schedule made it difficult to stay on top of all the reading materials, assignments, and quizzes. There were times when it felt like the workload was unmanageable, and it was easy to feel discouraged and that I wasn’t going to learn. However, I realized that this experience was an important part of my journey toward becoming a Registered Nurse, as it helped me develop critical skills in time management and prioritization and how to work and learn under pressure.
To overcome these challenges, I relied on several strategies. First, good time management became essential. I learned to plan my weeks carefully, breaking down larger tasks into smaller, more digestible tasks. This allowed me to stay focused and avoid last-minute cramming, which reduced stress and improved my retention of the material, improving my test scores. Additionally, I got help from my classmates and teacher. Participating in study groups provided me with a fresh view of the topic, where we could talk about what we learned and clarify any confusing concepts. My instructor was also a great resource, offering guidance and support whenever I needed it and answering any questions I had.
