Discussion 4: Hurtado & Sihna, Chapter II Beyond Machismo Chicana Intersectional Understandings: Theorizing Social Identities and the Construction of Privilege and Oppression

In the book Beyond Machismo Hurtado & Sihna, Chapter II, the authors strongly make the argument that intersectionality affects social identities of all people. The social self is divided into the social self’s division and the intersectional identity constellation in the chapter. Indeed, it is very complex and even Gloria Anzaldua’s Borderlands Theory plays into the conversation. In this discussion:

1. Choose a quote from the chapter that best represents the discussion about intersectionality and/or social identity theory and write it out with the page number. Then, watch the two videos below and write ONE 5-6 sentence paragraph about how you believe social identities have affected each slam poet performing in the videos. Both are SO powerful in their deliveries. Pay attention to their word choices. 
2. Then write ONE 5-6 sentence paragraph about the social identities that you personally negotiate or experience on a daily basis that affect the way you see the people and the world around you.
3. Lastly, respond to at least one classmate’s post. I will attach some classmates post when they become available and you chose only 1 to reapond in 5-6 sentences
