Observe:  Tell you reader the title of the source being used, as well as the author name/s.

Food as Medicine: Diet and Mental Health by the 1907 foundation

Support:  Provide a lead-in statement, such as: According to __author last name__, “1-3 lines of text from the source” (in-text citation).

According to the 1907 Foundation, “Even though people have always needed food to survive, we still have a long way to go before we fully understand how our food consumption truly affects our mental health. While many studies have shown a high correlation between better mental health and better diet, those terms are still vague and there are many niches and kinks left to work out. “

Interpret:  Tell your reader what the 1-3 sentence passage of text means in your own words.  You might start with: This means . . .

This means that even though we are aware that a better diet and exercise can help us, psychologically, we don’t entirely know what a better diet truly means. It can be hard to know exactly what your body needs at all times, and that uncertainty can unfortunately cause unhappiness on its own.

Evaluate:  Discuss what you found interesting about the source, what the source helped you better understand about your topic, and/or synthesis that shows how the passage compares to other sources examined in your paper.

In this source, i found it interesting that it has examples of what you can eat to improve you mental health, it suggest certain roots to do this job. This source is the only one i have examined so far that provides examples to help improve your mental health.

Overcoming Trauma and Obesity: Your Path to Healing

By Fly Dog Digital

Support:  Provide a lead-in statement, such as: According to __author last name__, “1-3 lines of text from the source” (in-text citation).

According to the nutrition education foundation, “Studies have consistently shown that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction, can significantly increase the risk of developing obesity later in life. In fact, adults who experienced four or more ACEs are 37% more likely to be obese compared to those with no ACEs.”

Interpret:  Tell your reader what the 1-3 sentence passage of text means in your own words.  You might start with: This means . . .

This suggests a heavy link between mental health and food besides direct causes. So food can affect you mental health, however your mental health and environment can also affect your relationship with food.

Evaluate:  Discuss what you found interesting about the source, what the source helped you better understand about your topic, and/or synthesis that shows how the passage compares to other sources examined in your paper.

I find it interesting that adverse childhood experiences caused obesity as usually you would think those sort of situations would cause eating disorders like anorexia which causes an extreme drop in weight.

What does WP2 ask you to produce? Which part(s) may be challenging in accomplishing this project? What are you excited about?

What are your initial thoughts in terms of your topic for this project? Which direction are you likely to pursue? Why?

How is your semester going in general? For this course particularly, what has been working for you, if any? What has not, if any?

WP2 asks you to perform a literature review on a food themed topic. I assume this means to write a review on topics such as food safety or recipes. I am excited about this because one of my passions includes food but I don’t know if I entirely understand the topic. I believe I am going to focus on the effect certain foods can have on you psychologically. I am a psych major and have a passion for my work so I always try to fit psych in where i can.

I know some foods, such as chicken, make your brain produce happy chemicals, and I would like to research that further to see if any other foods produce this effect. I will try to pursue a more scientific approach on this writing project than I did on my last one. My semester is going well, I enjoy my classes and understand the material well. For this course, however, I have found it very easy to stick a part of my personality into the writing projects and work we must complete. I love being able to make my work truly my own and this class allows me to do that well.

these are prewriting assignments i have done for the assignment this is technically an english assignment

here is the rubric

ENGL2367

Writing Project 2: Literature Review Essay

Word Count: at least 1500   Time frame: Week 5-9    Percentage of final course grade: 22%

A literature review is a critical assessment of existing scholarship on a particular topic. In it you summarize and synthesize existing research in the field to

  • assess the value of the research already done by others
  • identify prevalent trends
  • discover what research remains to be done in a particular subject area.

You are NOT writing an original argument supported by outside sources.  NOR should your paper simply be an annotated bibliography (a reference list with summaries of each source). A literature review essay combines summaries of each source, analysis of text from each source, and synthesis of sources.

Literature reviews are written in all disciplines.  In addition to helping you to become a more informed researcher in a specific aspect of your field, writing a literature review develops your skills as: (1) a researcher—How efficiently can you find and obtain relevant articles or books on your research subject? and (2) a critical evaluator—How effectively can you evaluate sources to find credible ones?  Remember, you are only as credible as the sources you cite.

For this assignment you will:

  • Choose a food-themed topic of interest to you that you would like to learn more about.  You will be using secondary sources (and one interview if you’d like) to learn more about your topic.
  • Use the library databases to familiarize yourself with available scholarship on your topic.  Read around. Don’t try to read everything, but do look at both recent research and foundational works.
  • Once you have a sense of the scope of scholarly research on your subject, narrow your focus. Do this by determining how you can better understand your topic with the sources you find.
  • Determine your research question. What question are you looking to answer through your research? While you don’t need to have an argumentative thesis for WP3, you’ll be developing insights about what can be learned from the sources you find.
  • Begin your research in earnest. You are to find between 5-8 texts focused on your topic.  The sources you select must fit the following criteria:
  • At least 2 sources must be scholarly journal articles
  • At least 2 of your sources must be found on the CSCC Library Database (library.cscc.edu)
  • One of your sources may be an interview you conduct
  • One of your sources may be a website on your topic
  • One of your sources may be a podcast, video, or documentary

Note: Remember that the librarians at CSCC can be very helpful in finding sources.  Consider using the chat feature on the library page, or you may email the reference librarians at [email protected]

  • To find at least 5 usable sources, you will probably need to find/read 8-10.  Not all will be relevant (for reasons we’ll discuss in class).  Do not limit yourself to sources that just support your opinions on the topic.  You will need to have a comprehensive understanding of your subject, and to do this, it’s good to look at sources that examine a variety of perspectives.

NOTE: You’ll want to (1) examine bibliographies for reoccurring names, which can lead you to key researchers in the field and (2) scan sources for titles cited repeatedly, which can lead you to key texts in the area.

  • Take notes on your sources.  Note the date, scope, initial hypothesis, research methods, and procedures, supporting sources, and ultimate findings. Compare and contrast these elements to assess how the studies are related.

  • analyzing the history and qualities of a type of food (such as rice, bananas, cheeses, etc)
  • the food of a particular region (Irish food, Japanese food, Somali food, etc)
  • a cooking technique (smoking meats to preserve, etc)
  • the life of one or more famous chefs or celebrity chefs
  • a type of food you love (sushi, etc.)
  • school lunches
  • food insecurity
  • genetically modified foods in the human diet
  • a particular food industry that you find interesting such as the lobster fishing industry in Maine
  • food in art/literature
  • portrayals of food in science fiction/anime
  • eating competitions
  • the diet/s of ancient civilizations
  • or any other food-themed topic you find interesting
  • Analyze each of your 5 sources using the Observe, Support, Interpret, and Evaluate Method (OSIE):

Observe:  Tell you reader the title of the source being used, as well as the author name/s.

Support:  Provide a lead-in statement, such as: According to __author last name__, “1-3 lines of text from the source” (in-text citation).

Interpret:  Tell your reader what the 1-3 sentence passage of text means in your own words.  You might start with: This means . . .

Evaluate:  Discuss what you found interesting about the source, what the source helped you better understand about your topic, or how the passage compares to other sources examined for the paper.

Criteria for Success for the Final Draft of Your Paper:

Introduction:

  • Gets the reader’s attention and introduces the topic
  • Informs readers why your subject is important—why should we care about it?
  • Provides necessary background on the subject and defines terms
  • Explains how you selected your five sources

The Body Paragraphs (suggested to have one paragraph per source, but you may organize differently if you choose):

  • Includes a summary of each source
  • Completes the OSIE method or similar analysis of each source
  • Includes a synthesis of your sources that explains how one essay compares to the others.  Consider: What is unique about this essay? What does it include that the others don’t? What similarities do these essays share?  What picture do they provide of the subject?

Conclusion:

  • Leaves the reader thinking about “what’s next.”  To do this, answer one or two of the following questions:
  • What conclusions can you draw from your study of these 5-8 sources?
  • What major trends do you discern in this area of study?
  • What questions has your review sparked for you?
