Hypothesis → Participants will be more likely to form a positive first impression and/or make favorable judgments about an unfamiliar face if they share similar features (eye color, freckles, skin color, hair color).
-
Independent Variable: Photograph of face (Not sure how we will get photos to use. Possible options, https://www.chicagofaces.org/)
-
Dependent Variable: Judgment in regard to a specific trait
-
Aggressiveness, Attractiveness, Likeability/Openness, Intelligence, Trustworthiness
-
What statistical tests will you use to analyze your results?
Correlation test and ANOVA. (first discuss with the teacher)
-
Describe how you will conduct your study, step by step.
-
Each participant will be shown a photograph of an unfamiliar face for a certain amount of time on a computer screen.
-
After each photo then they will be asked to make judgements about the person in the photograph. For instance, “How aggressive is the person in the photograph on a scale from 1-5, 1 being not at all and 5 being very aggressive?”
-
This type of question will be asked for a number of traits (from the tentative list written above) for each photograph.
-
Before or after the experiment (not sure yet), the participant will be asked to fill out a survey about their own physical appearance. Questions will include “what is your hair color?”, “what is your eye color?”, etc. so we can examine the link between participant appearance and judgments made about the appearance of the faces in the photographs.
