Article Review : Localisation of humanitarian action in War-torn Countries: The experience of local NGOs in Yemen

Instructions for Writing the Article Review

You are asked to write an article review of at least 825 words. Please use the article I have attached for the review. This task aims to help you improve your critical reading skills and learn how to present your analysis clearly within a limited word count.

Below is a clear breakdown of what you must do and how to structure your review.

Word Count

  • 825 words.

  • The bibliography and in-text citations (sources you mention in your review) are not counted in the word limit.

Critical Analysis (Not a Summary)

  • Do not summarize the article or just describe it. This means you shouldn’t just retell what the article says.

  • Instead, critically analyze the author’s argument. Look closely at the evidence and reasoning the author uses. Ask yourself, “Is the argument convincing? Why or why not?”

Citing Other Sources

  • To support your analysis, refer to and cite other sources. This means you can use information from other books or articles to strengthen your points.

  • You must include a bibliography in APA 7 style at the end of your review.

Before You Read the Article

  1. Check the Author’s Background

    • Find out what experience or knowledge the author has in the subject. Do they have the authority to write about this topic?

  2. Examine the Article’s References

    • Look at the bibliography of the article. Has the author used important, well-known works in the field? This shows how much research they did.

While You’re Reading the Article

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What is the Purpose of the Article?

    • Is the author trying to make a new argument or build on past research? Are they disagreeing with other academics?

  2. What is the Main Argument and Conclusion?

    • Can you clearly see what the author is trying to say? Is the argument easy to follow? Are there any errors in how the argument is developed?

  3. Is the Research Strong?

    • What types of sources does the author use? Is the evidence based on facts (quantitative) or opinions/experiences (qualitative)? Are there any gaps in the information or logic?

  4. Is Anything Missing?

    • Did the author leave out information you think is important? Do they consider other perspectives that should have been included?

  5. Does the Evidence Support the Conclusion?

    • Does the evidence provided by the author back up their conclusions? Could there be other explanations for the evidence?

  6. What Does This Article Add to the Field?

    • Think about how the article helps develop knowledge in its subject area.

Structure of Your Review

Make sure your review is well-organized and covers the following areas:

  1. Evaluation, Application, and Independent Thinking

    • Show that you have thought deeply about the article and applied your own ideas to it.

  2. Subject Knowledge

    • Demonstrate your understanding of the article’s subject.

  3. Use of Research and Literature

    • Refer to other sources to support your points.

  4. Referencing

    • Use APA 7 style for citations and bibliography.

  5. Structure, Organization, and Presentation

    • Make sure your review flows logically and is clearly written.

  6. Clarity of Expression

    • Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Write clearly and avoid mistakes.

Quotations

  • Avoid direct quotes from the article because the word limit is tight.

  • It’s better to paraphrase the author’s argument in your own words.
