My definition of Justice:
As an Indigenous woman, justice means having a voice that stands equal to my non-Indigenous neighbors. It is the hope that future generations will live in a society where they feel safer and less constrained by systems that were never designed for us. Justice demands that we confront and dismantle structures rooted in colonial history—systems built to oppress non-Western peoples—and rebuild them to ensure that every individual, regardless of ethnicity or race, has a rightful seat at the table. It is also about honoring Indigenous wisdom, integrating cultural perspectives, and recognizing the value they bring to decision-making and policy. Justice is not only about holding wrongdoers accountable when they bring harm—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—but also about paving a path toward collective healing for Indigenous communities and for all people.
My conception of justice comes from:
A lived experience of a youth who lived in the children and family services system as a foster child; experiencing discrimination and abuse in foster homes, experiences intergenerational trauma while receiving inadequate supports and services to address the intergenerational trauma.
