You will be investigating the connection between ‘mythology’ and
archaeology.
(1) Select a ‘site’
from the list provided and conduct research into the ‘site.’
(2) What is the
‘mythos’ surrounding the site? Dependent on the site, mythology can include the
history of discovery—what led to the original (or ongoing) quest/exploration to
find the site (myths/oral tradition, historical reference, literary reference,
etc.)? Who is credited with building the site (individual or culture)? Some of
the claims about the site may fall into the realm of pseudoarchaeology. Sometimes
there is a germ of truth in the mythology.
(3) What do we know
about the ‘site’ from archaeological research (the factual evidence pertaining
to your chosen site). Profile the W5 of the site (who, what, when, where, and
why) and provide a history of excavation for your site (should it exist).
(4) Discuss the
connection between mythology and archaeology in general, and with reference to
your specific site research.
A minimum of 6 sources is required, 4 of which must be
academic/scholarly in nature. The research paper should be @ 8 double-spaced single
sided typed pages in length (12-font), and it must be properly formatted and referenced throughout the
text (direct quotations as well as paraphrases, including page numbers for
both where relevant), and include a
references cited section. We will be using the Society for
American Archaeology (SAA) Style Guide. Please number your pages and include a
title page containing all of the appropriate information (paper title, student
name, course number and section, instructor name, and date of submission).
Note: the title page does not count towards overall paper length. Be sure to
write in proper essay format (introduction, body and conclusion); sub-headings
are encouraged.
