Briefing note to bring a nursing issue to the attention of a decision-making body

The proposal was already written before, but this is more elaborate piece of writing with more requesitions, as per the guidelines below, attached rubric and FAQs.

A scholarly briefing note is a piece of academic writing, which can be used to bring a nursing issue to
the attention of a decision-making body (e.g., unit manager, nursing educator, professional organization,
governmental body, or policy analyst) in an evidence-informed fashion that includes recommendations
for action.

Length: A 1000-word Briefing Note (not including title page and reference list[minimum of 4 to a
maximum of 5 scholarly sources] using APA 7th edition guidelines). Observe the importance of
adhering to writing requirements/instructions

Background:
Nurses have the potential to shape health care delivery and contribute to changes in health and public
policy. However, most nursing students describe a lack of understanding of political processes and how
they can impact change within the broader health care system. A key theme for your fourth year is the development and
integration of professional self into the health care system. One way to demonstrate professional
development is to critique current nursing issues and trends and examine how they have an impact upon
your professional development as a registered nurse, and the profession as a whole
This scholarly briefing note must address the socio-political dimension of the nursing profession
through identification of policy/best practice/knowledge gaps and justification of recommendations
related to the chosen topic. This assignment also allows you to explore how nurses can play an
active role in shaping health care policy through submission of policy briefs that include
recommendations for action. Note: Developing an action that is at the level of “awareness” is too
general to satisfy the requirements of this assignment. Therefore, your briefing note must include
recommendations that extend beyond “increasing awareness” of a particular nursing issue.

Organization of the Briefing Note – required sections:
1. Cover page

2. Introduction- An introductory paragraph including the topic, the statistical/conceptual evidence
that this topic is of critical importance, and a crisp statement of the author’s request for action.

3. Content (Position Presentation and Recommendations)- Presenting detailed evidence of the
problem inherent in existing policy or best practice documents, evidence of the need for change,
and evidence supporting alternative approaches to the issue. If there is no existing relevant
policy, the need for its development must be justified by other policy-type documents such as
white papers, green papers, position papers, position statement, standards/competency
documents or professional reports. All knowledge claims should be supported by rationale
retrieved from both White and reputable Grey evidence that underpin your problem statement
and your recommendations for action. At least ONE of the documents MUST be a grey literature
document from a reputable source. Bracketed citations are included in the 1000-word limit.

4. Conclusion- Summarize the major final thoughts restating the issue, identified gap and
recommendations within 2-3 sentences, using slightly different words.

5. References- Scholarly references must be from Canadian sources. This includes the use of
grey literature (standards, reports, official documents, FAQs, white papers, etc.), retrieved from
relevant Canadian professional websites such as those listed in the resources above (See page 6),
reports, official documents, association websites, etc. However, one seminal research or policy
paper from a reputable international source may be included.

Number of references: You are expected to include a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 5
highly relevant scholarly references, reflecting a balanced combination of white and grey
literature.

Strictly follow APA 7th edition style guidelines.
Strictly follow instructions for scholarly writing style.
Review the grading rubric to be informed of required content in more detail, will be attached below.

***PLEASE also see attached the previously completed proposal for the briefing note with some feedback to improve the topic:***
Please make it  more specific in the paper about the statements made.
For example, not all nurses experience moral distress in caring for patients undergoing MAID. Be sure to use accurate information with evidence to support statements. Also look more specifically about what has already been done in terms of MAID – why is this issue relevant at all.
